360/OPEN SUMMIT: THE WORLD IN MOTION - THE EVOLUTION OF DIGITAL CITIZEN MOVEMENTS IN ASIA - As repression has evolved, so has the use of tech by civic movements. Digital security and safety have become a survival skill in Hong Kong and, more recently, in Myanmar, where citizen-led movements have had to navigate internet shutdowns, blocked websites, state surveillance, and state violence. Despite challenges, online organizers are deploying creative strategies to not only adapt, but leapfrog: finding new ways to stay safe and iterating along the way. With journalists who are tracking this evolution and activists who are pushing back, this session will discuss the unique challenges developing in the region and how global technology companies and policymakers have a role in protecting civic space online in Asia.
