360/OPEN SUMMIT: THE WORLD IN MOTION - GENDER ONLINE: FROM LIABILITY TO FULL PARTICIPATION - You can’t have democracy if 50 percent of the global population doesn’t participate; however, information operations frequently use gendered and sexualized narratives to attack women, trivialize their accomplishments, and dissuade them from political participation. Meanwhile, platforms have not seriously addressed gendered disinformation, and in consequence, women must devote extra resources and expose themselves to harm just to engage in online civic spaces. We must raise our standards and widen our perspective to understand that the absence of hate speech is not safety. In this panel, civil-society leaders will share their insights into the dynamics of gender-specific disinformation, how large social media platforms respond to this abuse, and the consequences of these campaigns for those they target.
