TRANSFORMING THE BRITISH ARMY: A CONVERSATION WITH GENERAL SIR MARK CARLETON-SMITH - The Atlantic Council’s Transatlantic Security Initiative in the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security and the Atlantic Council’s Europe Center hosted a public event on “Transforming The British Army: A conversation with General Sir Mark Carleton-Smith” on Friday, May 14.
The United Kingdom’s Integrated Review of Security, Defence, Development, and Foreign Policy, and the related Defence Command Paper, outline a vision for the UK’s future global engagement and defense strategy in a competitive age. The Defence Command Paper aims to reorganize and modernize the UK armed forces to meet the ambition of the Integrated Review, while balancing limited resources. As the United Kingdom looks forward to a more persistently engaged global footprint, including a tilt to the Indo-Pacific and reinvigorated commitment to NATO, the British Army must modernize and adapt to meet the evolving challenges of competition and conflict.
To discuss the British Army’s role in meeting the demands and strategic priorities of the United Kingdom, the Atlantic Council was delighted to host General Sir Mark Carleton-Smith, Chief of the General Staff of the British Army, during his visit to Washington. During this event, General Sir Mark discussed global security trends and challenges, and how the British Army is transforming for the future.
