SPACE INDUSTRY FOR SPACE STRATEGY - The Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security’s Forward Defense program hosted a fireside chat with Lieutenant General Shawn N. Bratton, US Space Force (USSF) deputy chief of space operations, strategy, plans, programs, and requirements. The conversation will outline the key findings of the 2024 USSF Commercial Space Strategy and what actions the USSF will take to put this strategy into action.
The release of 2024 Commercial Space Strategy comes at a pivotal moment. The days when the US government had a monopoly over the most innovative space systems have long passed, and today, the USSF can draw on innovative solutions from a burgeoning commercial sector. Indeed, the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine has demonstrated just how essential commercial space systems and data can be for national security. These developments also bring to the fore questions of possible adversary aggression against space systems owned by US-based commercial operators and how the USSF and the nation should address that. To meet this new reality, the USSF has released this long-anticipated strategy which aims to show how it plans to incorporate commercial systems into its planning and explore partnerships with (and send clear demand signals to) industry collaborators. It also answers the critical questions of safeguarding space assets amidst potential conflict scenarios.
What does this really mean for the future of US space security? How will the commercial space sector shape the future of the USSF, and vice versa? Tune in to this event to learn more.
