A FIRESIDE CHAT WITH DITTE JUUL JØRGENSEN, DIRECTOR GENERAL FOR ENERGY AT THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION - The European Union has made great strides in securing alternative gas imports, with storage filled to capacity, demand reduction and preparedness measures in place and gas prices falling 70 percent from this 2022’s peak. Yet, as Russia grew increasingly desperate to pressure Europe into lifting sanctions and scaling down support for Ukraine, a total gas cut-off remained possible with the winter ahead. The European Council has remained vigilant and unified in its approach, calling for the Commission to articulate measures for demand aggregation, energy saving, market stabilization tools new pricing models, and fast-tracked energy project permitting. Yet, with continued uncertainty, additional solutions may still be needed to ensure Europe can remain defiant and united in the face of Russian aggression, especially for next winter.
In a public fireside chat with Olga Khakova, Deputy Director for European Energy Security. Director General Juul Jørgensen discussed the European Union’s approach to the energy crisis and outlined areas for US-EU collaboration on energy security.
