THE REGIONAL RESPONSE TO VENEZUELA’S ELECTION: AMBASSADOR FRANCISCO MORA - The US has joined Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, and Uruguay in recognizing opposition candidate Edmundo González as the winner of Venezuela’s July 28 presidential election. After the opposition published more than 80 percent of the electoral ballots showing González as the clear winner, many countries have called for transparency and independent verification of the results announced by the government-controlled National Electoral Council, which claims that Nicolás Maduro was the winner.
In response, an emergency meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS) was called last week. While a resolution condemning the electoral fraud failed to pass, not a single regional government voted against it. Meanwhile, protests within Venezuela have been met by repression from security forces.
Amid the ongoing uncertainty, how can regional governments help to safeguard the will of the Venezuelan people as expressed at the ballot box? What different advantages do various countries in the region have in incentivizing a democratic transition?
