THE REGIONAL RESPONSE TO VENEZUELA’S ELECTION - On July 28, Venezuelans voted for their next president in an election that has been deemed fraudulent by the opposition and, in response, regional governments have quickly come together to question the government-announced results. The White House has said that “there are clear signs that the election results announced by Venezuela’s National Electoral Council do not reflect the will of the Venezuelan people.”
In a demonstration of regional solidarity with the Venezuelan people, the governments of ten Latin American countries released a joint statement calling for the “complete revision of the results in the presence of independent electoral observers” and an emergency meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS).
How can regional governments help to safeguard the will of the Venezuelan people as expressed at the ballot box? How can Venezuela’s neighbors further coordinate to push for a democratic transition?
