RETALIATION AND RESILIENCE: CHINA’S ECONOMIC STATECRAFT IN A TAIWAN CRISIS - Over the past two years, Beijing has watched carefully as Western allies have deployed unprecedented economic statecraft against Russia. In June 2023, we analyzed possible G7 economic actions against China in the event of a Taiwan crisis and modeling their associated costs. However, our report largely left a critical question unanswered: how would China respond?

This new report examines China’s strategy to address US and broader G7 sanctions, focusing on its potential retaliatory measures and its means of sanctions circumvention.

This event introduces the key findings of the report and explain the thinking behind the economic costs associated with each scenario. Josh Lipsky, Senior Director of the Atlantic Council GeoEconomics Center, and Logan Wright, Partner at Rhodium Group, discuss the report’s findings and recommendations. This is followed by a high-level panel discussion featuring Peter Harrell, nonresident fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and former Senior Director for International Economics at the US National Security Council; Abigaël Vasselier, head of the Foreign Relations team at MERICS; and Yao Yang, Director of the China Center for Economic Research at Peking University.
