360/OPEN SUMMIT: THE WORLD IN MOTION - DIGITAL GAMING: A JUGGERNAUT INDUSTRY QUIETLY SHAPED BY GEOPOLITICAL FORCES - The global gaming market topped $179 billion in revenue in 2020, making it larger than the global film industry ($100 billion) and North American professional sports (around $75 billion) combined. Though one of the largest digital revenue streams for many companies, gaming’s role in innovation and the digital economy is still overlooked. This multi-billion dollar industry plays an increasingly important role in shaping the world-view of its participants and the politics of their societies. In its tenth five-year plan and again in 2020, the Chinese government re-emphasized the strategic importance of the gaming industry to national economic development. The results of this targeting have been that the Chinese company, Tencent, went on a buying spree, investing over $6.7 billion in gaming acquisitions globally. To understand the future of rights on and offline, it’s important to understand the scope, capabilities, and landscape of one of the world’s most widespread connective technologies and industries.
