US ASSISTANT SECRETARY PYATT ON THE FUTURE OF RUSSIAN ENERGY INFLUENCE IN EUROPE - Europe’s energy markets endured the most challenging impacts of the crisis manufactured by President Putin. Nonetheless, the nations achieved an unprecedented phaseout of Russian energy sources, including the end of gas transit through Ukraine, following Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. With alternative oil, coal, and gas supplies, Europe unshackled Russia’s ability to weaponize its exports and reduced Moscow’s revenues to fuel atrocities. But Europe’s energy system and economy are under strain, and it might cede some of its hard-fought wins. To realize its target to cut off energy supplies from Russia, Europe will have to address remaining LNG exports, pipeline flows, and supplies of nuclear fuel and critical energy materials.
In this high-level discussion, Assistant Secretary Pyatt will examine a path for global allies to get ahead of future supply constraints and support Europe’s continued efforts to strengthen its energy security and advance economic prosperity through bolstered trade and innovation cooperation.
