FIRESIDE CHAT WITH MAROŠ ŠEFČOVIČ - The European Union has demonstrated firm commitment to Ukrainian sovereignty through political, humanitarian, and financial support–as well as military assistance—throughout the war. In February 2023, the European Commission pledged an additional €450 million during the Commission’s visit to Kyiv, bringing total assistance to approximately €50 billion. At the same time, the European Union is reorienting its energy supply chains to break its dependence on Russia, while finding ways to support Ukrainian energy security as the Kremlin’s assault on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure continues. European and transatlantic cohesion on Ukraine policy will be critical for providing Kyiv the necessary tools to prevail.
Šefčovič joined Ambassador András Simonyi, nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council Global Energy Center, to discuss the Commission’s strategy for supporting Ukraine during and after the war, the need for transatlantic coordination to finance Ukrainian reconstruction, and his work leading the European Battery Alliance and EU critical minerals policy to build innovative, sustainable and globally competitive industry.
