ALLIED RESOLVE: NATO PERSPECTIVES ON THE RUSSIAN INVASION OF UKRAINE - The Atlantic Council’s Transatlantic Security Initiative in the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security hosted a conversation on “Allied resolve: NATO perspectives on the Russian invasion of Ukraine” with four former NATO Secretaries General on June 15, 2022. This edition of the Atlantic Council’s Front Page event series featured Secretaries General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Lord George Robertson, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, and Javier Solana in a discussion on how to better address the crisis.
As Putin’s war in Ukraine escalates, it is apparent that his objective is not only to maintain Russia’s sphere of influence in Ukraine, but to bend the present European security architecture to his will. With the toll of Russia’s destruction growing, NATO has enhanced its deterrent posture along the Alliance’s eastern flank while providing political and materiel support to Ukraine. Still, pressure is mounting for NATO to do more to help those fighting for their freedom and self-determination. During this event, the former Secretaries General of NATO discussed the political and military options available to NATO and what more the transatlantic alliance can do to protect Ukraine and its people, strengthen Western resolve, and bolster collective defense.
