THE RAMIFICATIONS OF RENEWED CONFLICT IN THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO - The Atlantic Council’s Africa Center hosts a discussion on the deteriorating security situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). There has been a dramatic deterioration of the situation in eastern Congo. Following the recent captures of Goma and Bukavu by the Rwandan-backed M23, thousands have been killed with many more fleeing. The United States has imposed sanctions, and the United Nations has reported summary executions, including of children, by M23 fighters.
This event aims to help the DC community gain a better understanding of the ongoing security situation, the forces at play, and how the international community and African partners can support at this critical moment. Calls from the international community for de-escalation and a ceasefire have multiplied, so far in vain, against a backdrop of fears of a regional war.
The Africa Center has long focused on bringing attention to the strategic importance of the DRC and the critical role that the basin plays in the future of the continent and the world.
