Smart in 60 Seconds: Venezuela's democratic future hangs in the balance
31-Jul-2024
On Sunday, Venezuelans went to the polls to vote for their next president. Now, both candidates are declaring victory, amidst claims of voter intimidation and other irregularities carried out by the Maduro regime.
The election committee, which is controlled by current President Nicolás Maduro, declared Maduro the winner of another six-year term. But the committee has refused to release the full results, and opposition candidate Edmundo González claims to have won as much as 70% of the vote.
Venezuelans have taken to the street in protest and the US, EU, and several Latin American countries have refused to recognize the results.
The Atlantic Council’s Jason Marczak writes, “the international community must continue to exact pressure so that the will of the Venezuelan people can ultimately prevail.”
