Smart in 60 Seconds: Venezuela's neighbors must prepare for wave of migration

Since 2014, over 7.7 million Venezuelans—a quarter of the country’s population—have fled their homeland, escaping political repression and economic collapse. And now, with Nicolás Maduro tightening his grip on power after falsely claiming victory in the country’s recent presidential election, a new wave of migration is on the horizon.
And Venezuela's neighbors must prepare to deal with this new influx. As Atlantic Council’s Lucie Kneip writes, the US and its regional partners “will need to take steps to either accommodate Venezuelans’ displacement on a more permanent basis or provide support to governments that are willing to do so.”
