Iran’s Protesters and Pro-Democracy Movements
23-Feb-2023
WHAT CAN IRAN’S PROTESTERS LEARN FROM OTHER PRO-DEMOCRACY MOVEMENTS? - The Atlantic Council’s Iran Strategy Project hosted an in-person panel discussion on February 23, 2023, with activists and experts from Syria, Sudan, and Venezuela.
After the murder of Mahsa Jina Amini by the so-called “morality police” in mid-September 2022, a powerful wave of protests hit Iran, with protesters demanding an end to the Islamic Republic. As the protests enter their sixth month, it becomes integral to look outward at other countries’ case studies in their pursuit of freedom. Pro-democracy activists from Syria, Sudan, and Venezuela came together in this panel to discuss lessons from their lived experiences in their respective countries to inform their Iranian counterparts inside the country and in the diaspora on what it takes to sustain a protest movement and secure lasting change.
