BEHIND THE SCENES ON CENTRAL BANK DIGITAL CURRENCY - The GeoEconomics Center launched the International Monetary Fund’s new Fintech paper “Central Bank Digital Currency Behind the Scenes: Emerging Trends, Insights, and Policy Lessons.” The events keynote remarks were made by the Managing Director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, followed by a high-level panel discussion on the new research.

Opening remarks presented by Frederick Kempe, President and CEO of the Atlantic Council. The keynote conversation featured Mu Changchun, Director-General, Digital Currency Institute, People’s Bank of China, Tobias Adrian, Financial Counsellor and Director, IMF’s Monetary and Capital Markets Department, Gabriela Guibourg, Head of Analysis and Policy, Swedish Riksbank, and senior representatives from several of the central banks featured. Alice Fulwood, Finance Correspondent, The Economist, will moderate the discussion. Josh Lipsky, Director of the Atlantic Council GeoEconomics Center, provided closing remarks.

In January, 2022, the GeoEconomics Center published a major update to our flagship CBDC Tracker, showcasing CBDC development in 91 countries, representing 90% of global GDP. The IMF’s new paper spotlights CBDC developments in the Bahamas, Canada, China, the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union, Sweden, and Uruguay, and identifies the key lessons learned.
