A UNIFIED RESPONSE TO THE ENERGY CRISIS: A FIRESIDE CHAT WITH H.E. VÁCLAV BARTUŠKA, CZECH AMBASSADOR-AT-LARGE FOR ENERGY SECURITY - Russia continues attacking Europe’s energy security as part of its war against Ukraine. To negate Russia’s energy leverage, the continent must ensure its energy security for the winter while building a more secure and sustainable energy system for the future.
Central and Eastern Europe have anticipated the threats of Russian energy leverage, leading the way in Europe’s plans to diversify its energy systems. Now, hosting the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Czech Republic is faced with the monumental challenge of leading the bloc towards a coordinated approach to reduce prices, scale up supplies, and stay on track to meet climate targets and end the region’s reliance on Russian energy sources.
In a public fireside chat with Olga Khakova, deputy director for European energy security at the Global Energy Center, Ambassador Bartuška outlined the European Union’s latest efforts to support households and industry while maintaining solidarity across Europe. The conversation also identified avenues for US engagement. Ambassador Richard Morningstar, founding chairman of the Global Energy Center and former US ambassador to the European Union, delivered opening remarks.
