IS EUROPE FIT FOR THE DIGITAL AGE? AN UPDATE ON EUROPEAN DIGITAL SOVEREIGNTY - Since coming into office nearly three years ago, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has made “A Europe Fit for the Digital Age” a pillar of the Commission’s work. With promises in policy papers to “secure digital sovereignty” for Europe, “digital sovereignty” has become a guiding principle for the Commission’s regulatory proposals.
Three years on, what does “digital sovereignty” mean in practice? While the term remains a nebulous and controversial term in Brussels and in capitals around Europe, digital sovereignty in practice carries outsized implications for the transatlantic relationship. The Digital Markets Act and the Digital Services Act, for example, form the most notable additions to the EU’s regulatory push with effects predominantly for US tech firms.
This event by the Europe Center provided an update on the European Union’s push for “digital sovereignty,” what it means in practice, and what implications it holds for the future of transatlantic relations. The event also featured a discussion of the Europe Center’s most recent report “Digital sovereignty in practice: The EU’s push to shape the new global economy.”
