CONGRESSMAN MICHAEL MCCAUL ON RUSSIA AND THE AUTHORITARIAN CHALLENGE - The Atlantic Council hosted an #ACFrontPage conversation featuring Congressman Michael McCaul (R-TX-10), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, to discuss the threat to US interests from Russian aggression in Ukraine and elsewhere, as well as Russia’s growing authoritarian partnerships with North Korea, Iran, and China.
This discussion occurred as Russia intensifies its attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, brings in North Korean troops, escalates its sabotage campaign in Europe, and continues to violate NATO airspace. While the Biden administration can still take steps to counter this threat, much of the burden will fall on President-elect Donald Trump, who has yet to outline his approach to ending the conflict and those in his inner circle have suggested varying ways he might approach it. NATO’s role is also crucial in addressing Russia and its growing collaboration with China, Iran, and North Korea, making Trump’s stance toward the Alliance a key aspect of his national security policy.
The chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee is one of the country’s leading voices on national security policy. McCaul outlined his perspective on the growing challenges ahead in a conversation moderated by John E. Herbst, senior director of the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center.
