ELECTIONS 2024: REP. WALTZ ON LEADERSHIP AND THE FUTURE OF US FOREIGN POLICY - The Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security hosted a conversation with Congressman Mike Waltz (R-FL-6) to discuss the future of Republican foreign policy, alongside his new book Hard Truths: Think and Lead Like a Green Beret. In his book, Waltz explores how the lessons learned from his service as a Special Forces officer have shaped his public leadership and political career. This Atlantic Council event is part of the Atlantic Council’s election-year event series, “Elections 2024: America’s Role in the World,” and supported by RBC Capital Markets, LLC.
Special forces play a critical role in enhancing national security by conducting critical missions that require agility, precision, and advanced tactical skills. These elite units are essential for addressing an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape. Over the next four years, the United States will confront major challenges across the globe—from competition with an increasingly aggressive China and revisionist Russia, to regional conflict and humanitarian crises, globalization and innovation, and emerging security and defense threats. It is vital that the next US president have a clear, long-term strategy for US security and prosperity.
Ahead of the 2024 election, Waltz joined the Atlantic Council to discuss the United States’ role in addressing critical issues under a republican foreign policy, as well as the impacts and lessons of Waltz’s military and public service. After brief remarks from Frederick Kempe, president and CEO of the Atlantic Council, the Congressman will lay out in conversation with Dr. Matthew Kroenig, vice president and senior director of the Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security, his unique insights on the strategic mindset required for effective leadership.
