US-ROMANIA ENERGY AND CLIMATE COOPERATION — Romania has been a strategic partner of the United States for over 25 years and is a reliable ally in the fight against Russia’s energy warfare. The country’s gas and nuclear energy generation play an important role in regional supply security as Europe prepares for the next winter. Following through on its ambitious renewables deployment targets would further reduce energy imports dependence for the region. Romania also plays a key role in supporting Ukraine and Moldova’s efforts to free themselves from the Russian energy sphere. Building out energy interconnections between the three countries is essential to the region’s energy security and decarbonization. The United States can play a dynamic role in advancing these efforts.
In this discussion, Romanian Minister of Energy H.E. Sebastian Burduja and Assistant Secretary for Energy Resources at the US Department of State Ambassador Geoffrey R. Pyatt discuss how the United States and Romania views the region’s energy security and decarbonization and challenges and where US engagement can play a decisive role.
