The outbreak of conflict between Israel and Hamas has highlighted Egypt’s central role related to mediation of hostages, humanitarian efforts, and security challenges. The war has led to the internal displacement of 1.7 million people in Gaza. Humanitarian aid has been transported to Gaza through Egypt, but concerns abound about a potential refugee influx into Egypt from the Strip. Moreover, the security challenges related to Gaza are immense and will have a sustained impact on Egypt. Meanwhile, the conflict has exacerbated pre-existing challenges in Egypt across sectors.
