THE CARIBBEAN GENDER EMPOWERMENT FORUM - Only 22 percent of ministerial portfolios and cabinet positions in the English-speaking Caribbean are held by women. There has been progress, but at a slower than expected rate. Women and girls also face additional barriers—including climate change, which expands gender inequality and threatens the livelihoods of women and girls. Collective action is needed to chart a long-term and sustainable path to equality for women and girls. What opportunities exist to address these challenges and carve out a more equitable future? How can government, civil society organizations, and the private sector coalesce around solving these issues?
As part of a new partnership between the Atlantic Council and UN Women, which is a Recipient UN Organization as part of the European Union–United Nations Spotlight Initiative program, this event explores how strengthening women’s role in politics can help address gender challenges in the Caribbean, namely gender-based violence, and how to address the disproportionate effects of climate change on Caribbean women.
