MINORITY RIGHTS IN IRAN: DISCRIMINATION AND PATTERNS OF REPRESSION - Watch this discussion featuring a number of human rights and civil society leaders, presented by the Atlantic Council’s Iran Strategy Project. The panel discussion aims to use a minority rights framework to provide a contextualized and historicized account of the social uprising that ensued following the death of Mahsa Jina Amini in September 2022, a member of Iran’s Kurdish minority, and to address the ongoing issue of discrimination against minorities in Iran.
The panel explores the ongoing discrimination against minority groups in Iran, particularly in the borderland regions, and will delve into patterns of repression of minority activism, languages and cultures, and the exclusion of ethnic and religious minorities from public life and economic development. The discussion will also shed light on some of the underlying conditions, including environmental issues, political corruption, widespread economic crises, and the repression of civil society.
