Throughout 2023, local Syrian organizations have led the response in the immediate aftermath of the event and have continued to advance the rehabilitation and resilience efforts among the impacted communities. With the new humanitarian challenges facing the region in 2024, the overall humanitarian response is facing diminished funding and an uncertain future for the UN cross-border access from Turkey for populations in need in northwest Syria. Targeted military attacks from the Syrian regime and its allies against public infrastructure such as schools and hospitals continue to further hinder the return to normality and the full recovery of civilians impacted by the devastating natural disaster.
The discussion features a distinguished group of experts to provide a comprehensive overview of the lasting impact of the earthquakes, the efforts to recover, and what the international community should do to support populations in northwest Syria.
