LOCAL PERSPECTIVES: UNLOCKING US-COLOMBIA TIES ON DEVELOPMENT AND DEMOCRACY - Despite governance challenges, a lackluster economy, and emerging threats related to security and crime, important opportunities exist to deepen the US-Colombia relationship, especially within the context of deepening regional insecurity. The commitments that Colombia made in its 2016 peace agreement have ramifications that go far beyond the initial objective of reaching peace with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). If implemented fully, the agreement could lay the foundation to deepen Colombia’s democracy, bring new opportunities for investment in neglected but resource-rich areas of the country, and deal a crushing blow to organized crime.
