PRESIDENT UMARO SISSOCO EMBALÓ ON THE FUTURE OF US-AFRICA TRADE AND SECURITY - Join the Atlantic Council for an #ACFrontPage conversation with President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau.
Embaló will be joining the Atlantic Council while he is in Washington, DC for a summit between West African leaders and US President Donald Trump. The discussion comes amid a shift in relations between Africa and the United States—with new US tariff policies, a pivot toward “trade rather than aid,” the sunsetting of the US Agency for International Development, and a US-backed peace plan between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In conversation with Atlantic Council Africa Center Senior Director Rama Yade, Embaló will discuss the significance of the summit with the US president and his fellow African leaders, as well as his vision for relations between his country, the wider African continent, and the United States. Embaló—who has met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss economic, security, and mining cooperation, and with President Xi Jinping in China, where relations between the two countries were elevated to the rank of “strategic partnership”—will also address the non-aligned foreign policy he has pursued since coming to power in 2020.
