ARE CAPITALISM AND CLIMATE PROGRESS COMPATIBLE? - Climate change, along with its implications for health and critical infrastructure, are reshaping quality of life and the environment across the globe. The debate around the most impactful ways to adapt to and mitigate against these changes and who should lead on the solutions is also heating up; much of it is being viewed as a zero-sum game between economic growth and emissions reduction. Akshat Rathi, senior reporter for climate at Bloomberg News argues that you could do both in his new book, Climate Capitalism: Winning the Race to Zero Emissions and Solving the Crisis of Our Age.
Please join the Atlantic Council Global Energy Center for a public debate on whether capitalism and climate progress are compatible on Tuesday, April 9 at 8:30 a.m. ET. Neela Banerjee, National Public Radio’s first-ever chief climate editor will join Rathi to delve into the following questions: How could the free-market system be optimized to incentivize climate action? Who are the unlikely heroes of scaled decarbonization solutions and what can be done to duplicate the wins? How do stakeholders identify and avoid false solutions and greenwashing? Landon Derentz, senior director of the Global Energy Center and Morningstar Chair for Global Energy Security, will provide opening remarks.
