WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE EU? - Following the European Parliament elections in early June, the European Union (EU) will undergo a period of transition. Over the summer, the heads of the EU’s member states will meet to debate the bloc’s political priorities and direction, and decide on key leadership posts including the President of the European Commission, the President of the European Council, and the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
The future direction of the EU and its leadership will have important implications for the transatlantic partnership and the United States. Several policy priorities are already being floated for the next European Commission and Parliament including competitiveness, security and defense, economic and energy security, enlargement, and more.
How should Washington understand the political change inside the EU? What should the be the main priorities of the EU to realize its ambitions? What will be the implications of the EU’s focus for the United States, and what are the major priorities for the US-EU relationship? The Europe Center hosts an expert panel to discuss the priorities of the next European Commission and Parliament as well as its implications for the transatlantic relationship.
This event is part of the Europe Center’s Transatlantic Horizons series, which seeks to outline a productive relationship for the United States and Europe for 2025 and beyond.
