A CONVERSATION WITH TÁNAISTE MICHEÁL MARTIN, MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND DEFENSE OF IRELAND - As the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement approached, Tánaiste Micheál Martin reflected on the legacy of this important peace agreement and future opportunities for the island of Ireland, as well as the important role of the US-Ireland relationship in supporting the peace process. This year also marks fifty years of Ireland’s European Union membership, a period that has coincided with transformative change across the country’s social and economic landscape, and more recent challenges for the peace process after the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union. Transatlantic partnership is more important than ever as Europe and the United States confront a wide range of geopolitical threats, not least the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Against this backdrop, Micheál Martin, Tánaiste (deputy prime minister) of Ireland joined the Atlantic Council in Washington to share how Dublin is navigating these challenges close to home, further afield, and in close partnership with the United States and the European Union.
