GINA RAIMONDO AND MARGRETHE VESTAGER ON THE FUTURE OF US-EU ECONOMIC TIES - The Atlantic Council hosted an #ACFrontPage conversation featuring Gina Raimondo, US Secretary of Commerce and Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice President of the European Commission for a Europe Fit for the Digital Age. Raimondo and Vestager participated in this conversation at the Atlantic Council Studios in Washington, DC, following the US-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC) ministerial meeting earlier that day.
The transatlantic community enters 2024 facing a series of difficult questions: Can the US and European Union make the most of the transformative potential of artificial intelligence while regulating its biggest risks? Can both economies marshal enough resources to produce critical technologies including semiconductors closer to home? Does economic security mean something different in Brussels than it does in Washington? How do allies work together in the era of friendshoring and industrial policy? These questions come at the same moment war rages in Ukraine, the crisis in the Middle East is at risk of expanding, and the global economy is facing a series of challenges to sustainable growth.
