AS LONG AS IT TAKES: THE EUROPEAN UNION’S SUPPORT FOR UKRAINE - One year since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the European Union (EU) and its member states are jointly standing for the people of Ukraine as “a true inspiration for Europe,” as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen declared during her recent visit to Kyiv. In addition to the EU’s humanitarian, military, and financial support, EU member states have welcomed millions of refugees fleeing Russia’s brutal war. Last June, the European Council formally welcomed Ukraine as a candidate for membership in the EU, confirming that Ukraine belongs to the European family. The EU-Ukraine Summit took place in Kyiv on February 3 and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Brussels for meetings with the leaders of the EU and its member states on February 9, 2023.
As we enter the second year of Russia’s barbaric invasion, what is the outlook for Ukraine’s future and partnership with the European Union and its member states? How has Europe stepped up in support of the Ukrainian people and how can we ensure that the strong transatlantic cooperation endures?
Ambassadors of the European Union, Sweden – as holder of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union – and Ukraine sat down to discuss the European response to Russia’s barbaric invasion and Ukraine’s future.
