FRAGMENTING COMMODITY MARKETS: GEOPOLITICS AND THE IMPACT ON FOOD SECURITY AND THE CLEAN ENERGY TRANSITION - War in Europe and heightened geopolitical tensions between the world’s largest economies have put new strains on global economic integration, particularly in commodity markets. Ahead of the International Monetary Fund (IMF)-World Bank Annual Meetings in Marrakesh, the IMF will publish new research to help quantify some of the possible costs and implications of this more severe commodity markets fragmentation.
Which commodities and countries are most vulnerable to disruptions of trade flows? Which markets pose the greatest macroeconomic risks? How would further fragmentation of critical minerals markets affect the clean energy transition? And what would be the short- and long-run consequences of commodity market fragmentation for the global economy?
We invite you to join the GeoEconomics Center and the Global Energy Center for the unveiling of the IMF’s chapter from the forthcoming World Economic Outlook that analyzes the impact of geoeconomic fragmentation in commodity markets. This event features Martin Stuermer, co-author of the chapter and economist at the IMF’s Research Department, and Dr. Ellen Wald, Atlantic Council Senior Fellow.
