A CONVERSATION WITH EUROPEAN COMMISSION VICE-PRESIDENT VĚRA JOUROVÁ - 2024 is a historic year of elections with 83 elections taking place in 78 countries, including the European Parliament elections in June, and the US presidential elections in November. As technology rapidly evolves and election campaigns unfold on both sides of the Atlantic, end users, tech platforms, governments, and electoral officials will face a unique set of challenges from disinformation to algorithmic bias. With the European elections on the horizon, the European Union (EU) has made significant strides to introduce and implement new rules governing media, digital services, artificial intelligence, and political advertising—all contributing to an information ecosystem that aims to protect the fundamental rights of European citizens.

The importance of democratic values, tackling disinformation, media polarization, foreign information manipulation and interference, particularly in the context of elections, are salient issues in Europe and worldwide. While Europe presents a blueprint, the United States is working on its own measures to combat AI-powered disinformation and AI-generated images intended to deceive voters.

Against this backdrop, Vice-President of the European Commission Věra Jourová joined the Atlantic Council for a discussion on transatlantic and global information integrity and media freedom in this critical election year.
