CREATIVE INDUSTRIES UNLOCK ECONOMIC GROWTH FOR AFRICA, SAYS STATE DEPARTMENT’S LEE SATTERFIELD - Lee Satterfield, acting US under secretary for public diplomacy and public affairs, is leading the United States’ global efforts to engage individuals through academic, cultural, and youth exchanges.

In 2022, US President Joe Biden issued an executive order to strengthen ties between the United States and African nations by fostering collaboration among leaders, organizations, and members of the African diaspora across several industries—including the creative industries—in order to promote mutual economic growth and opportunities.

Satterfield turned to the African Creatives Spotlight series to share remarks about the important role of Africa’s creative industries. She highlighted the immense growth potential that the sector represents, thanks not only to Africa’s expanding youth population, increasing urbanization, and rising middle class (dynamics that increase activity in the industry) but also the “amazing talent” on the continent.

Satterfield, who is also the US assistant secretary of state for educational and cultural affairs, added that “education is an essential component of Africa’s creative economy,” and detailed ways the United States is partnering with African countries to—through education—expand the workforce and provide skills training, ultimately supporting creative industries.
