JOURNALISTS REPORT: PREVIEW OF MEXICO’S JUNE 2 ELECTION - One hundred million Mexicans are registered to vote in what are shaping up to be historic elections on June 2. Along with local positions, all Senate and Chamber of Deputy seats are up for election as well as eight governorships and the presidency. One of the top two presidential candidates – Claudia Sheinbaum, former Head of Government of Mexico City, or Xóchitl Gálvez, a former Senator – will set history by becoming Mexico’s first female president. The election follows a presidential campaign with violence, security, and corruption at the top of the agenda and with both top candidates expressing a desire to work with the next US president on addressing migration.
What might be the potential electoral outcomes on June 2? How will the outcomes reshape the political landscape, influence Mexico’s future policies, and affect Mexico’s relationship with the United States? How do journalists reporting on the Mexican elections navigate the complexities of political coverage?
