THE DAY AFTER: MAKING SENSE OF VENEZUELA’S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION - Venezuela’s July 28 presidential election—including the vote, the actions leading up to and on election day, and the national and international reaction—will determine the country’s trajectory for years to come. In particular, the response to the election from the United States and others in the international community will be critical, with all eyes on the results announced by the National Electoral Council and the findings of local monitors and international observers.
Amid a highly volatile situation, a clear analysis of the larger political context is crucial. How will domestic and international players react to the election? What will the election mean for future negotiations to advance a peaceful, democratic solution, and how can the US and its allies better coordinate to support such an opening?
