ROAD TO WASHINGTON: GENERAL CHRISTOPHER CAVOLI ON THE NATO SUMMIT - On Friday, May 17, the Atlantic Council broadcasted an #ACFrontPage conversation with General Christopher G. Cavoli, Commander US European Command and Supreme Allied Commander Europe. Cavoli, a recipient of the 2024 Atlantic Council Distinguished Leadership Award, discussed the upcoming 2024 NATO Summit, allied strategies to counter renewed Russian revanchism amid Moscow’s ongoing war in Ukraine, and efforts to modernize the Alliance’s capabilities. This event is part of the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security’s flagship Commander Series programming, generously supported by Saab.
Seventy-five years ago, twelve nations founded NATO to provide collective defense and uphold the rules-based international order. Today, with thirty-two members, NATO promotes global peace and stability both inside and beyond its borders. NATO has responded to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine by supporting Kyiv, expanding the Alliance to include Finland and Sweden, and adopting new regional defense plans. However, recent Russian gains threaten Ukraine and European security.
Ahead of July’s NATO Summit in Washington, Cavoli breaks down the key priorities for the summit, support for Ukraine, and efforts to modernize the Alliance’s military capabilities to be fit for purpose for the battlefields of the future.
